Great Smoky Mountains Railroad

The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad seeks “to share the spirit of model railroading with individuals of all ages” and they do just that by offering every type of train ride imaginable. Your family can take a ride on The Polar Express during the holiday season, or just see the sights. Or, for adults only, you can join on the train’s mystery dinner theatre, or take an overnight romance vacation on the train.

Located only an hour away from Asheville, the train rides range from a four-hour ride with beautiful views, or you could take a package that would include dinners and even overnight stays, just like in the old days when travel was an excursion.

The trains run on the Murphy Branch of the Western North Carolina Railroad. In 1880, workers in Asheville began working on an extension of the railroad, ultimately adding 116 miles to reach the town of Murphy. Most of the workers were convicts, or chain gangs. Nicknamed iron horses, trains became a favorite method of goods and passengers alike. In fact, by the early 20th century, six passenger trains ran everyday between Asheville and Lake Junaluska, and four between Asheville and Murphy. The train’s use began declining after WWII, as new technology and improved cars took center stage. In 1988, the first excursions by trains began being offered from various railroad owners. In December of 1999, American Heritage Railways purchased the railroads from the various owners and organized as the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad.

There are four levels of cars for you to travel in. If you prefer to sit on the edge of your seat, and see the expansive view, then the open car seating is for you. For those who prefer climate controlled seating, then coach, with old-fashioned ‘50s seats and fans, or crown coach, with A/C and heat, could be your better options. Finally, there is the club car where passengers will sit while they eat, especially for those riding dinner trains.

For fantastic views of the present, and the experience of the past, the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad is a timeless choice for all ages.
